Q & A Regarding Tinnitus & Hyperacusis

What are Tinnitus & Hyperacusis?

Tinnitus is a phantom auditory perception that can usually be detected only by the sufferer. Noises may range from ringing, hissing, crickets, buzzing, or other sounds. There may be one sound or a combination of sounds. Often, tinnitus will be experienced in shorter episodes prior to becoming persistent and intrusive.

Hyperacusis is sensitivity to everyday sounds in the presence of primarily normal hearing. People who have this condition will complain of pain or irritation with ordinary sounds like dishes clanking, dogs barking, or other sounds that do not bother other people.
